Cottage Program

Cottage units were the predecessors of the Seniors Self-Contained Housing Program. They are usually small self-contained units (e.g., a four-plex) built prior to 1969 and are located on the same site as a lodge. Food and housekeeping services are not supplied to cottage units, however, they may be available for an additional cost. Cottage units receive a Lodge Assistance Program grant of $2.00 per day for each low- and moderate-income resident.

Management and tenant selection are delegated to management bodies.

Cottage unit rates are set by the local management body so they may vary between different areas of the province.

Where can I find cottage unit accommodations?

The Alberta Housing Act gives local housing management bodies responsibility for the day-to-day operation of seniors housing programs. Find the management body that administers seniors housing in your area.

Rules and Regulations

Operational policies regarding continued residency in a cottage unit are developed by each management body. Cottage units are not governed by the Residential Tenancies Act, however, they are governed by the Alberta Housing Act and Regulations.
